5th Annual Latina Art Show

In 1 on September 9, 2009 at 4:35 PM

For the past couple of months, I have been using my Tuesday nights wisely.  From 6:30 to 7:30 pm, I have been attending the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas-FW meetings for the 5th Annual Latina Art Show.

I have learned a great deal and I had no idea how much work went into planning an event of this magnitude, from flyers, invitations, letters, donations to public relations, meetings, conference calls and my favorite, research.

As part of my news writing class in my last semester in school, I wrote a story about the art show and was interested in it, so this year, I decided I wanted to be a part of it.  Cool, huh?  Yeah, I thought so.

The HWNT_FW is dedicated to fundraising and awarding scholarships to graduating ladies so they could pursue their higher education and that’s why the Latina Art Show is such a BIG deal.

The HWNT_FW takes art donations as well as other miscellaneous items and then auctions them off.  Donations of all kinds are accepted up until September 16th and the event will take place on Saturday, September 26th at the Rose Marine Theater at 6 pm.  There will be live music by Aurora Bleu and lots of art, lots and lots of art.

So come and support what I have been doing during my time of unemployment.  It really is a great cause and a lot of work went into it.  Let me know if you want more information on this, whether you are artist who wants to donate or are interested in attending and possibly bidding on an item.

Oh, and did you know the art will be on display the whole week beginning on September 21st?  Well, you know now, so go check it out before the big event.

With the right tools…

OK, so I have been out of work for almost four months.  Sad, I know, but it has freed me up to do a lot of things, of which I have only done a couple.  I am volunteering my time to the Union Gospel Mission and to the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas-Fort Worth chapter for their 5th annual Latina Art Show.  I am also helping out around the house a whole lot more.  Seriously, I have become like the family’s “Cinderella.”

Well, along with my domestic duties, my mom decided to paint the house.  Guess who was in charge!  Yes, yours truly.

I drove around to different stores to compare paint prices, which I could have done online, I picked out the color, moved all the furniture and even managed to get paint all over my hair.  As I looked through the paint supplies,  I noticed this weird, squared, small and handheld little gadget.  Little did I know that it would become the MVP of the whole show.  It was the SHUR-LINE Paint Edger.

It was used to paint the edges of walls, to the side, the bottom and the top by the ceiling without getting that dreaded mark from the roller. It produced a straight edge on EVERYTHING!  I truly believe that little gadget is what kept my painting from being mediocre and it prevented me from having to go back and repainting where the roller accidentally hit.

Originally, I was only going to paint the back room and the living room.  I later added the hallway as well and once my dad got home, he said something I just didn’t want to hear in the tired, sore, half-zombied state I was in.  He said, “It looks good.  You should do the kitchen next.”

Noooooooo!!!!  Not more work!  But, coming from a guy to whom everything is done wrong and to whom you can’t voice your ideas to because only his ideas are the way to go and only he knows how to do it correctly, it was a great compliment.  It really did look great if I do say so myself.  It almost looked professional, almost… and all thanks to the eight world wonder, the paint edger.

It just goes to show you that with the right tools, you really can do anything.  Woo hoo!!
